SOUTH ISLAND ROAD TOURS

ACCOMMODATION LIMITS INCREASE

Road tours to South Island tourist spots such as Milford and South Westland could be doubled over the Christmas-New Year periods if sufficient tourist accommodation was available in those places, said the manager of the Railways Road Services for Christchurch (Mr J. W. Davis) yesterday). “We have to stagger tourist bus arrivals at Milford so that the tourist accommodation will not be overtaxed,” he said. “If a tourist bus pulls out of Milford at 10 a.m. we have another busload of tourists arriving to take their places at the Milford Hotel by bidday.” Mr Davis said that 150 persons in five Railways Road Services buses made an excursion to Akaroa and back on New Year’s Day, and five extra buses were put on on, Tuesday to bring holiday-makers back from Akaroa in time to start work on Wednesday. From 1500 to 1600 persons travelled in reserved train seats from Christchurch on Tuesday. More than 600 persons reserved seats for a special excursion train trip from Christchurch to Otira and back on the same day.
