MT. NGAURUHOE

RENEWED ACTIVITY IN CRATER

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 5. Renewed activity from the crater of Mount Ngauruhoe has been noticed during the last two weeks. Steam has been seen rising during the day. and on clear nights a glow from the crater has been visible.

For the last few days, the mountain has been shrouded in mist, but a technician from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, who climbed the mountain last week-end noticed slight changes. He brought back samples of pungent-smelling sulphur.

Mr F. E. Studt, head geophysicist at Rotorua, said that the visible signs implied an increase in temperature, which meant that a new burst of activity was likely. However, it was impossible to make an accurate prediction.

Mr Jack Gibson, who mans the Taurewa fire look-out, said he had first noticed a slight glow about a fortnight ago, but rain had recently obscured his view.
