N.Z. YEARLING SALES

AUSTRALIAN FUNDS CUT 50 PER CENT. (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 4. A cut of about 50 per cent, on the sum spent at the last national thoroughbred yearling sales in New Zealand has been imposed by the Federal Treasury on funds of prospective Australian buyers at the sales opening on January 16. The allocation Is £A70.000. equivalent to £NZ56.000. Out of this, all costs of sending yearlings to Australia will have to be met. Allocations for Australians interested in buying this year have been made in Australia on the-basis of the buyers’ expenditure at the last sales. The success of New Zealand horses in Australia during the last 12 months increased the number of would-be buyers considerably, but with the allocations based on last year’s sales only, the newcomers had no opportunity to enter the lists. New Zealand thoroughbred breeders have made strong representations to the Federal Treasury. through the New Zealand Government officials in Australia, for an easing of the import restrictions, but so far without avail. One argument advanced by New Zealand breeders is that the cut of 50 per cent, made by the Treasury in the allocation of imports of thoroughbred yearlings ms excessive, when cuts in other imports range between 7} per cent, and a maximum of 25 per cent.
