THE DOG NUISANCE
Sir,—l am very fond of dogs in their right perspective, but when I see some small-brained woman, who should be nursing a family of children, slobbering all over a funny faced diminutive apology for a dog and wasting a lot of perfectly good affection that the creative intelligence of the universe intended to be directed to other purposes, I am doubtful that the missing I;nk has ever been found. A dog is a fine playmate for children, but a mighty noor substitute.—Yours, etc , PHILEMON L. BASHFORD Rangiora, January 4, 1956.
Sir, —To “Selfishness or Ignorance” T would suggest kindly tolerance and to average the good and had instincts of our hairy and feathered companions in life. They were all created to fill a useful role to mankind; and if they become a nuisance to humans, the latter were given, in most cast's, the intelligence to combat evils. The birds of the air, including our ducks and gulls on the riverside, we tolerate with affectionate pleasure. The dogs rescuing castaways on the Swiss Alps, lovely St. Bernards, the huskies now in the Antarctic—are these all to be sacrificed to satisfy the sadistic tendencies of dog-haters? Personally. I doubt if the latter are all there. How many of them are inspired with the love and courage of Peter Norrie..who risked his life for a stray dog? Christian teaching for 2000 years has not proved effective.—Yours, etc., HIRAM HUNTER. January 5, 1956.
Sir,—The signature of “Selfishnes or Ignorance” certainly fits that person like a glove. It is quite evident that this correspondent overlooks the filthy habits of some humans; and may I quote in conclusion the words of a professor on the Continent, who said. ‘‘There is no filthier animal than the human animal.”—Yours, etc..
