TOKYO THEATRE PANIC
10 PERSONS INJURED, TWO SERIOUSLY
(Rec. 11 p.m.) TOKYO, January 4. Police today said a ventilator fan suddenly put into operation in an overcrowded Tokyo picture theatre yesterday caused panic among the audience of 500.
In the ensuing stampede. 10 persons, mostly children, were injured, two seriously. Police said the theatre, with a capacity of 400, was overcrowded. Cries of “Fire” were heard when the theatre management turned on a huge ventilator to improve air conditioning. The sudden roar caused .the panic. A stampede at a Shinto shrine in the first few minutes of 1956 killed 124 persons.
Damage In Eiffel Tower Fire
(Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 4. Fire which destroyed part of the top of the Eiffel Tower early yesterday caused damage estimated at £50,000 sterling, the Paris correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” reported today.
