Section Play Begins In Fours At N.Z. Tourney

BOWLS

(New Zealand Press Association)

DUNEDIN, January 4. Surprises on the first day of the fours section of the New Zealand bowling championships in Dunedin today included the defeat of rinks skipped by three former champions, C. G. Spearman (Westport R.S.A.), T. T. Skoglund (Carlton), and E. H. Ravenwood (North-east Valley). Section play will continue unt’l Saturday evening. Each rink will play eight games before postsection play is started. After overnight rain, the greens were in good order today, and were not so fast as had been--expected. The tournament was officially opened by the Mayor of St. Kilda (Mr A. H. Finnie).

Both Spearman and Skoglund redeemed themselves with convincing wins in the afternoon, but Ravenwood. a 1952 Empire Games representative, ended the dav with two losses. His conquerors were the Dunedin Caledonian four skipped by the consistent C. S. Hellyer, and H. Todd’s Newtown rink.

A grand exhibition by a rink from Karitane skipped by W. N. Mitchell resulted in the defeat of the Carlton four headed by Skoglund, who has been skip in three champion fours in recent years. The Karitane club is one of the smallest in New Zealand and the members of the four - —Mitchell, E. J. Rumble, V. Barber and R. J. S. Te Tau—were playing in their first national tournament. Skoglund, trailing 10-31, scored the possible at the twenty-first, when, after his final drive, it was found that all eight Carlton bowls were nearest the jack. Skoglund was right back in form in the afternoon, and the four gained a handsome win, 32-6, over E. N. Bromley (Beckenham). In the afternoon, Mitchell beat H. S. Reid (Kaituna). 34-18. Spearman was beaten. 24-19, by a Kaitura rink in the morning. In the afternoon, however, he scored a comfortable win.

One of the fancied rinks for the title, J. Pirret’s Tuakau four, started off promisingly with a 24-16 win over A. D. Lawless (Wakari). Pirret, w “°. was Empire Games champion at Auckland in 1950 and runner-up at Vancouver in 1954. again had G. Crouch as his lead. In the afternoon. Pirret’s four won again, beating C. D. McGarry (Christchurch), 22-15.

A regular competitor at national tournaments, T. W. J. Barron ‘Mirgmar) had a fairly narrow win over O. Watson (North-east Valley) ln j 1 match. Barron was in good form in the singles at Wellington last year and ( gained fourth place. .Barron beat G. H. Jolly (Leith), Ai-io, in the afternoon. Borich’s Two Wins w. Borich (Hamilton) beat E. T ; Stickle iDallington), 30-16. With "■ Vi Hawkins as his third. Borich should be prominent. Hawkins and Bonch are the present holders of the pairs title.

This afternoon, Borich beat W. S Roberts (Fendalton), 30-10 ski P of the Winning Stratford four at the 1952 championships, started off successfully as skip t tr e Balmoral four today. He beat J. H.
