POLIOMYELITIS OUTBREAK
NO FURTHER CASES IN CHRISTCHURCH
No new cases of poliomyelitis were admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital yesterday. At present there are five positive cases in the hospital, together in the one ward.
Since the epidemic began in New Zealand six cases have been admitted in Christchurch, and there was one death in the week ended December 17.
The medical superintendent of the hospital (Dr. T. Morton) said yesterday thai the position was not bad in Christchurch at present. The poliomyelitis committee set up at the hospital, comprising one physician in charge, an anaesthetist, and an orthopaedic surgeon, was ready for emergencies. According to the Deputy Medical Officer of Health 'Dr. H. T. Knights) the number of definite cases in the Christchurch Health District is now seven, with one suspect. Five and the suspect are in the Christchurch hospital. one is in the Kaikoura Public Hospital and the other is in an outlying district of Christchurch. ANOTHER SOUTHLAND CASE (New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL. January 4. Another case of poliomyelitis was notified in Invercargill today. There have been 25 cases in Southland since October 22. The latest patient is a 14-year-old Invercargill girl.
