FINE FOR LICENSING OFFENCE On a charge of having sold liquor after hours. Albert Joseph Deyell, licensee of the Red Lion Hotel, was convicted and fined £lO. at a sitting of the Magistrate's Court. Rangiora. yesterday, before Mr L N. Ritchie. SM. Charges of opening the premises for sale after hours and of exposing liquor for sale after hours were withdrawn by leave of the Court. Deyell was represented by Mr A. C. Fraser Constable A. J. Buckley said in evidence that, with Sergeant G. Urquhart, he visited the hotel on Saturday. October 29, about 8.40 p.m., and through 3 side window on the east side of the premises saw four men. who were standing at the bar. supplied with liquor. Later, added the witness he and the sergeant got into the hotel by the rear door and saw the men still at the bar. , , x . . Deyell was then charged with having served liquor to Brian Hamilton qnd Ronald John Miles, persons under ’he age of 21 years, a plea of not ’uiltv being entered in each case. ’ Constable Buckley gave evidence similar to that given by him previously and said that Miles told the ■sergeant he was 20 and Hamilton said he was 22. Miles, giving evidence, said he was supplied by the licensee and added ■ hat it was the first time .e had been in the bar. Hamilton said he was born in England on February 13, 1936. Deyell gave evidence that he aia not question the men about their ages as he thought they were both 21 years ’'■The Magistrate said that when he looked at Hamilton he took him to be 23 years old. yet it appeared that Miles, who looked younger, was actually the older man. In the circumstances he could understand Deyell s mistake The cases would be dismissed On charges of being found on the □remises after hours. Terrence Leonard Carlvon Alan Leo Lucas, Brian Hamilmn and Ronald John Miles were eech °ned £2. On charges of being persons under 21 they were found in the bar. Hamilton and Miles were each •onvicted and ordered to pay costs.
