FENCING
BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL TOURNEY In a closely contested final bout, D. J. O. Caffin won the senior title at the Christchurch Boys’ High School fencing championships. Neither Caffin nor his opponent. L. Ewing, had lost a bout until they met in the final, but Caffin’s defensive tactics proved superior to the long-arm straight defence of Ewing. It was a most meritorious win for Caffin, as Ewing was placed .first equal in the individual men’s foils at the New Zealand fencing championships. A remarkably high standard was shown in each of the three grades, particularly as the majority of the junior and intermediate cont?sts were fifth formers or lower. Demonstration bouts were given by old boys of the school, and a final bout between Mrs E. McElwee, who was placed third in the women’s foils at the championships, and P. Temple, the winner of the New Zealand men’s title, proved most entertaining. Results were:— Senior.—D. J. O. Caffin, no losses, 1; L. Ewing, 1 loss, 2; R. Thomson, 3 losses and 18 points against. 3; J. Lloyd, 3 losses ani S> points against. 4. Intermediate.—W. Clark, no losses. 1: L. Mooar, 1 loss. 2; D Moore, 2 losses, 3. Junior (best of three bouts). —A. Haggerty 1, P. Ewing 2.
