GENTLE LU TO RACE LN N.Z. OAKS PROBABLE FAVOURITE FOR CLASSIC “The Press'" Special Service WELLINGTON, October 27. The Desert Gold Stakes winner. Gentle Lu, remained at Trentham after competing at the Wellington spring meeting, and will fulfil her engagement in the New Zealand Oaks. She is expected to travel south early next week. She worked exceptionally well this morning, and is the , logical favourite for the fillies’ classic at I Riccarton. I Last year, Glcnlee, after her win in the j Desert Gold Stakes, won the Oaks; and ' Gentle Lu is in the right form to copy that , Working on the trial grass, which was isofl, Gentle Lu (Page) completed half a ; mile in 52sec, the final three furlongs in ,38 3-ssec. She. galloped effortlessly, and ; could have bettered the time consideri ably. She will be ridden in the Oaks by .1. w. Harris, who was successful on her i in Ihe Desert Gold Stakes. j Her stablemate, Takatu, suffered a filling ■ in the off foreleg when he cooled off after jeontesting the Watkins Handicap on the second day at Trentham. He has reI turned to Takinini, and it is most unlikely i that he will contest the New Zealand Cup. Other visiting horses which remained [at Trentham before going south were Hot | Drop. Rare Charm, and Gold Sieve. I Hot Drop hit out well while doing pace work this morning. He has taken no ; harm from his outings at the Wellington meeting. He is likely to return to sprint racing in the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday week. He will go ! south tonight. Gold Sieve has come through his racing at Trentham well, and he is a possibility in- the Steward’s Handicap. Accompanied by Rare Charm, he will travel to Riccarton on Monday. Trcntham’s only candidate for the New Zealand Cup, Red Star, will go south on Tuesday. He was a creditable second in the Watkins Handicap, and he is in seasoned condition. His prospects will be enhanced if the going is easy or soft. He will be ridden jn the Cup by C. A. Bowrv. W. J. Eromby is taking Cattiva, Royal’ Tryst and Genre south on Tuesday. Cativa showed her Wellesley Stakes form was not true when she finished second in the Roseneath Handicap on Labour Day. She may do better in the Welcome Stakes at Riccarton. She will be ridden by W. J. Broughton. N. B. Holland will ride Royal Tryst. Other mounts at Riccarton for Holland include Nottingham (New Zealand Cup), and Syntax. CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB ACCEPTANCES Acceptances for all events on the first day of the New Zealand Cup Meeting will close at 4 p.m. today. —Advt.
