SMART TRIALS AT RICCARTON

I WATCH AND WAIT RUNS SOUND MILE Watch and Wait gained supporters for the Buchanan Memorial at the Banks Peninsula meeting - tomorrow with a sound mile trial on the outside of the course proper at Riccarton yesterday. A smart sprint by Watch and Wait :; stablemate, Rise and Shine, was another feature oi tiie training. Most of tiie work was done on the course proper, 17 feet out from the rails. Watch and Wait (C. 'J'. Wilson) led Battle Ensign (N. Eastwood) by a. length, and Hashish (A. H. East wood) was another half-length back, ending a mile in Imin 44 3-ssec, the last half in 52 l-ssec. Battle Ensign led early, but was trailing when they got to the half-mile. Watch and Wait finished her task strongly. She made no showing in the Pearce Handicap, run on a sticky track at Trentham on Monday, but was a rather unlucky sixth in the Wainui Handicap on the first day of the meeting. Rise and Shine (A. H. Eastwood) drew away in the last furlong to beat Gold Trend (G. H. Styles) by four lengths in their sprint from the six furlongs. Rise and Shine recorded Imin 1G 4-ssec for the distance, and 50 3-ssec for the last half-mile. Both are acceptors for the Brackenfield Hack Handicap at Motukarara. Air Comfort (B. W. McDonald) and Boissier Boy (B. Parsons) Sprinted from the seven furlongs in Imin 33 3-sscc. They ran the last half-mile in 52 3-5. ee. Motueka (B. Parsons; led SoJex (I. Oldham) by a head arte: - running half a mile in 51 2-ssec. The Rangiora winner, Royal Display (G. H. Styles), was too good tor Adaris (W. Hanlin) over seven furlongs. Royal Di--play won by three lengths, and ran the last half-mile in 51 2-ssec. Soir (A. J. Williams) and Kiaree Beau (G. W. Mein) ran a mile on terms in Imin 48sec. They galloped easily for the first half-mile, and .- printed Ihe last half in 51 3-Ssec. Haughty Chief (W. McGregor) and Tom Bowling (D. F. Coombe) recorded Imin 31 2-ssec for seven furlongs, and 52 3-Ssec for the last half-mile, which thev ran on terms. Fleur (W. McDonald) and Airscol were just ahead of Sun House (M. J. wadley) after sprinting from tiie half-mile m 50 l-ssec. Sprinted Fast Instanter (D. F. Coombe) followed in 49sec—a smart trial for a non-winner. Ngapunawai (B. Parsons) ran with characteristic dash from the mile, recording 50 4-ssec for the last half. Robbie Burns’(N. Cowles). Aquarius (B Parsons), and Abou Ben Adhem <‘D. F. Coombe) were abreast ending their halfmile in 49 4-ssec. Aquarius was later scratched for the Okain’s Trial Stakes at Motukarara On the plough, Ben alia (J. W. McDonald) and Cloque sprinted from the six furlongs in Imin 18 4-ssec, recording 53 l-ssec for the last half-mile. Dixie Leigh (F. H. Skelton) and Super J - Thistoll) followed in Imin 17 l-ssec, after covering the first two furlongs in 24 2-ssec, and the first three in 36 3-ssec. Ballast v (T. J. Smith) galloped strongly from the mile to the half in 51 3-ssec. and completed the distance in Imin 45 3-s«:ec His chance in the first leg at Motukarara will brighten if the track eases.
