N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS
MEN’S TEAM EVENT WON BY WELLINGTON
Wellington, with three wins, won the men’s provincial teams’ foils championship' at the New Zealand fencing championships. which «egan at H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus, yesterday. Canterbury was second, with a win, a draw, and a loss, and last year’s winners, Otago-Southland, was third with one win and two losses. Auckland was fourth with two losses and a draw.
The women’s event was won by the Canterbury team, which gained three wins, repeating the success of last year. Auckland was second with two wins and a loss. Otago-Southland was third with one win and two losses, and Wellington had three losses. The preliminary pools of the men's and women’s individual foils championships and the epee championship will be held today. The Deputy-Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning) opened the tournament, and said that fencing lent itself to the coordination necessary for living in this age. Detailed results of the provincial teams’ events were:— Women Auckland 9 wins, Otago-Southland 7 wins: Canterbury 10, Auckland 6; OtagoSouthland 14, Wellington 2; Canterbury 14, Wellington 2: Canterbury 11, Otago5; Auckland 11, Wellington 5. Men lO, Otago-Southland 6; Wellington 10, Canterbury 6; Otago-Southland 11. Auckland 5; Auckland and Canterbury drew, 8 bouts and 61 points each; Wellington 11, Auckland 5: Canterbury 9, Otago-Southland 7.
