Spain Not Competing In 1956 Games

(Rec. 11 p.m.) MADRID, October 19. Spain’s decision against competing in the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne has prompted strong criticism in Madrid. The National Sports delegation explaining the decision said today: “Spanish athletes are all working or studying, and the dates are very inconvenient. The journey, even by air, would be exhausting and costly.” The newspaper “A.8.C.”, said the delegation had received the equivalent of about £lOO,OOO last season from football pools. It would cost about £30,000 sterling to send a team of 50. “Our nation should not desert world competitions at which it is her duty to be present,” the newspaper said. Spain is competing in the Olympic equestrian event in Sweden and the Winter Olympics in Italy.

Death of U.N. Diplomat.—Dr. Carlos Davila, Secretary-General of the Organisation of American States and a former President of Chile, died early today. He was 68.—Washington, October 19.
