U.S. BATTLESHIP RUNS AGROUND

WISCONSIN LATER REFLOATED (Rec. 10 p.m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 18. The 45,000-ton warship Wisconsin went aground today while being towed across New York harbour. She was later refloated. A strong tide swept her out of the channel off the tip of Manhattan, in spite of the* pull of 10 tugs, on to a shoal known as Diamond Reef, 1000 yards south of the Brooklyn Bridge, in the East River. The 887 ft battleship, one of three now in active service, was refloated after two hours and a half. The Navy said no-one was injured in the mishap and the Wisconsin was not believed to have suffered any damage. In August, 1951. the Wisconsin’s buoys dragged and she went up on a mudbank in the Hudson river. She was freed that time in two hours by 13 tugs.
