TYRE FACTORY DISPUTE

CHAIRMAN APPOINTED BY MINISTER Mr H. Hopper, Conciliation Commissioner in Wellington, has been appointed by the Minister of Labour (Mr W. Sullivan) as chairman of the disputes committee to consider the dispute that led to the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company’s Papanui factory being idle from July 30 until the beginning of this week. 'Oie Minister’s appointment was made after the parties to the dispute had advised him that they were unable io agree on a chairman. Apart from the chairman, the committee will consist of three representatives pf the factory management and three of the Canterburv Rubber Workers’ Union. A firm date for the meeting of the committee had not been fixed yester-. day, but it is likely to be September. 14.
