FERTILISER WORK IN SOUTHLAND
SUPPORT BY OTAGO FARMERS (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, August 30. . D°y b have been raised about the attitude of farmers in Otago to the proposed Southland fertiliser works * 1 wou ld like to make it quite clear that my executive, which represents just on 2600 farmers throughout this province, has on several occasions given its support to the proposal,” said Mr H. S. Orbell, president of Otago Federated Farmers, in a statement today. He said his executive had kept in close touch with the directors of the Southland Co-operative Phosphate Company, the farmers’ company seeking to build the works, throughout its developmental work. Mr Orbell said. “The decision of the executive to support the farmers’ venture in Southland was made with the realisation that the fertiliser supply position here in the south had been most unsatisfactory and was likely to remain so or become worse. A new works is absolutely imperative if production is to be maintained, let alone increased.” “I would reiterate the wholehearted support of Otago Federated Farmers for the principle that a new works in Southland should be farmer-owned and I am sure. too. that many of our members will be prepared to take up shares in such a concern,” Mr Orbell added.
