There were 438 cases in New Zealand last year, apd 243 of them occurred in the Christchurch health district—B7 in Christchurch between January and July, 31 in the Dobson area in August, and 120 in the Chatham Islands. Of the Christchurch cases, 85 came from 38 families in an unsewered area. Sullage water, likely to be infected from the washing of soiled clothing, was run into the street channels in the area, the report ref cords, and during the winter months ! children were seen sucking ice from f the frozen water of the street gutters.
