SOUVENIRS OF ANTARCTICA

RESPONSE TO PUBLIC APPEAL (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. August 29. The Ross Sea Committee had received a number of offers of Antarctic souvenirs in response to its recent apgeal, said the secretary (Mr A. S. elm) today. “There are not a great many of these relics in New Zealand,’’ he said. The souvenirs lent to the committee would be used as displays in the main centres of New Zealand in conjunction with the £lOO,OOO public appeal to be launched on October 10 to provide funds for the New Zealand expedition, said Mr Helm. “We have offers of three sledges—one used by Shackleton on his attempted crossing of the Antarctic in 1914-16; another used by Admiral Byrd, and a third used in the Mawson expedition of the 1930’5.” he said. Other relics included a stuffed king penguin, large photographs of Antarctic pioneers, and a reproduction of a painting by Dr. Edmund Wilson.
