WOMEN’S HOCKEY

CANTERBURY BEATS MALVERN

BRIGHT GAMES AT N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS (Neiu Zealand Press Association) HASTINGS, August 29. Bright and interesting hockey was again provided at the New Zealand womens hockey championship today, the third day of the tournament. In the major division the two leading teams. Eastern Southland, holder of the K. Cup, and Auckland Town, secured their third successive wins in their actions. In the minor division only three teams. Poverty Bay, in Section A, and Hawke’s Bay and Taranaki in Section B, have had three wins, though Nelson leads Section C with two wins and a draw. The third round today was played m bright sunshine and before good crowds. Canterbury, revealing better stickwork, more polish, and superior teamwork, beat Malvern by 4 goals to 1, after leading 2-1 at half-time. Neither team was particularly impressive in the first spell, but after the change-over. Canterbury held a decided territorial advantage, the forwards being on attack for long periods. The Malvern defence generally was better than" the team’s, attack. The short and accurate passing of Canterbury was the feature of the game. Scorers were D. Abernethy (2), R. Moir, and C. Cole for Canterbury, and H. Henderson for Malvern. Championship points at the end of the third round are as follows: Major Division Section A.—Auckland Town 6, Canterbury 4, Malvern 2. Section B.—Eastern Southland 6, Maniatoto 3; Auckland Country 2, Wellington 1. Minor Division Section A.—Poverty Bay 6, Marlborough 4, Ruahine, North Otago, Wairoa, Manawatu 2.
