CANTERBURY AMATEUR

TITLES Although the entries for the Canterbury amateur wrestling championships were the lowest for years, the standaid of wrestling in the preliminary bouts al the Crichton Cobbers’ gymnasium last night augurs well for the part to be played by the Canterbury team at the New Zealand championships at Auckland next month.

B. Hadcroft, by winning his two bouts, became the Canterbury middle-weight champion, but it will be necessary for another eight bouts to be wrestled tomorrow night for the other grades to be decided. Hadcroft, in winning his title, gained a fast and meritorious win over J. Farmer, of Timaru, a former New Zealand title-holder. He had Farmer in difficulties after two minutes of wrestling, and nearly gained a fall with a perfectlyexecuted arm flip. After bringing Farmer to the mat, Hadcroft turned him for a fall in four minutes.

B. Roberts, the feather-weight titleholder, won his two bouts remarkably quickly He disposed of W. Shaw, of Timaru, with a headlock and cross buttocks in 10 seconds, and in his second bout with the same hold he took a fall from B. Halligan in five seconds. G. Hobson, who held the New Zealand title in 1954, won all his bouts by falls. Final bouts tomorrow night will be:~ Fly-weight: Jim De Malmanche v. R. Kavanagh: John De Malmanche v. F. Paviell. Feather-weight: M. Russell v. B Roberts. Light-weight: L. Keats v. D Jackson. Welter-weight: J. Lanini v. T. Wilson; G. Hobson v. D. Jackson (Timaru). Light heavy-weight: R. Moir v. M. Fernley; J. Farmer and J. Hickey wih wrestle for the runner-up in the middleweight.
