WOMAN’S MURDER

English Teacher On Cycling Tour

(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 29. French police, working under arc lights m a copse by the roadside near Amiens throughout last night, tried to unravel how and why a 29-year-old English schoolteacher, Miss Janet Marshall, was murdered. She had apparently been strangled with wire. The Paris correspondent of the “Daily Mail” said the body, dressed only in underclothes and with one shoe missing, was found in the copse by three young men yesterday afternoon after they had noticed a girl’s bicycle lying by the roadside. The police were puzzled because one wheel of the bicycle had been removed. On a label attached to the bicycle’s frame was the only clue to her identity—her surname and initials which the French police said were M.G., although the family in England know her as Janet.

Miss Marshall had been staying at a youth hostel in Paris. She was on a cycling tour of France. She recently passed her final examination as a schoolteacher at the Training College, London.

The police said that they had received a report that a girl’s bicycle was also seen at the roadside, on the same spot, last Friday, and they are investigating the possibility that the girl has been dead since then. If that report is accurate many motorists must have passed the murder scene, unaware that the body was lying in the copse.
