FIGHTER PILOT’S ESCAPE
(Rec. 8 p.m.) DARWIN, August 29. The pilot of a Mustang fighter had a lucky escape from death today when a bullet he had fired during gunnery practice ricocheted back from the range and smashed the plane’s canopy. The pilot, Squadron Leader Thomas Murphy, of the City of Adelaide Squadron, suffered slight "cuts to the face.
He was doing air-to-ground gunnery at the range and was pulling out of a dive when the bullet flew back from the ground and hit the Mustang. The Mustang came in for an emergency landing and touched down safely.
