SECOND DAY AT WASHDYKE

Another Chance For Border Reiver REFORMED MAY BEAT HURDLERS Border Reiver, decisive winner of the South Canterbury Steeplechase at Washdyke last Saturday, may be an improved horse for his attempt to win the Timaru Hack Steeplechase on the second day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s winter meeting tomorrow. Mrs J. E. Shaw’s Riccarton-trained Royal Chief gelding has risen 81b to lOst 81b, but that penalty may not be too much for an improver, as he is likely to be. Border Reiver was having only his second race after a spell when he won last week. Full Tilt got closest to Border Reiver last week, but was clearly outstayed. He comes into this field on 51b better terms, but that may not alter their positions. The Tongs and The Grange are Wingatui-trained newcomers at the meeting. The Tongs could make his first-day form valueless to some extent, if he shows the dash he did to win a hack steeplechase at Wingatui on a very heavy track. The Tongs stays well and ran some good races on firm tracks as a hurdler. The Grange easily won Jhe hack steeplechase on the first day of the Riverton meeting at Easter, and has since recorded a second, third, and fourth.

At his last start, he battled into third place in the Wingatui Steeplechase, two and a half miles, on June 11. He was well beaten, but finished ahead of Free Gift, Belgravia, and Colonel Argosy, which have raced well in strong steeplechase fields. Those below lOst have done little to raise hopes for them. The Kerrytown Hurdles may take on the same pattern as the corresponding race last Saturday, giving Reformed a strong chance of winning his second race for the meeting. He clearly outstayed the others last week, and under similar conditions he should do so again. A double for the meeting should also be well within reach of a smart Southland hack. Red Boa, which was not tested in the Beaconsfield Hack Handicap last Saturday. The rise of 101 b in the weights may not dull her speed sufficiently to keep her out of the finish. A newcomer, Copperfield, may be one of Red Boa’s strongest opponents. Another may be Gazette, a fast-finishing fourth after a slow beginning last week. Selections:— 11.30 a.m.—Caroline Stakes: Mimbar, Hope So, Bagpipe. 12.10 p.m.—Kerrytown Hurdles: Reformed, Brave Warrior, Poilu. 12.55 p.m.—Donald Grant Memorial Handicap: Relinquish, Suphero.
