402 Traffic Deaths On U.S. Holiday
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, July 5. National safety authorities reported today, as a grim reminder to careless motorists, that there had been 402 traffic deaths throughout the United States during the Independence Day week-end—a record.
The holiday was over, but these highway tragedies occurred in quick succession this morning: A mother and five of her children were killed and four more of her children and her brother-in-law were critically injured in Wisconsin when a passenger train struck their car. The father of the children saw the crash from a nearby house. A man and his son were killed when thieves making an escape in a stolen car smashed into their car in New York State. Three persons were killed and two others seriously injured when a bus struck their car in Pennsylvania.
