PILOTLESS JET PLANE
AMERICAN REQUEST TO AUSTRALIA (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, July 6. The United States has asked Australia to supply the technical knowledge to build a pilotless target jet plane. Announcing this, the Minister for Defence Production (Sir Eric Harrison) said that Australia had built the first, and only pilotless target jet plans in the world. The plane, known as the Jindivik, flies at a speed greater than any known jet aircraft. The entire controls are radio-operated from the ground. Sir Eric Harrison said that production of the Jin ’ivik was. only one of the many activities of his department. “The Department of Defence Production ranks as one of the biggest industrial organisations in Australia, hesaid. “The replacement value of its assets totals £100,006,000. It has 13,000 employees, and its production stock alone is valued at £28,000,000.” He said that Australia had beaten the United States in the production cf the Canberra jet bomber although the United States had drawn up blueprints well before Australia.
