PAINTING DRAWS BID OF £475
GOLDIE OIL PASSED IN AT AUCTION An oil painting by C. F. Goldie, the famous painter of Maori subjects, was passed in at auction yesterday afternoon when the highest bid. one of £475. failed to meet the reserve price, which was later disclosed as £5OO. The painting is entitled “Wahine with Pipe.” The painting was one of 270 lots from an expensively furnished house. It was the only lot offered with a reserve price and apart from a set of crystal finger bowls, was the only lot which did not sell. A bid of £45 bought a painting by Sydney L. Thompson, the well-known Christchurch artist, and brisk bidding followed for a number of prints and water colours. High bids for furniture at the sale included one of £3OO, the price paid for a six-piece flame mahogany bedroom suite. A mahogany lattice settee and four matching chairs were sold for £2lO. and an English oak dining table and six chairs brought £l4O. An early Victorian mahogany davenport was bld for freely and eventually brought £ 100. A 59-piece Bavarian dinner service was sold for £95. and an 89-piece English service brought £9O. More than 500 persons were present when the sale was at its height.
