STEAM POWER STATION
WAIKATO COALFIELDS INSPECTED ( (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 29. A Government party today studied at first hand prospective coal supplies for the Waikato steam power station. The party comprised Mr C. H. Benney. Under-Secretary of Mines. Mr A. EDavenport, general manager of the State Hydro-electric Department, and Mr I. Lythgoe. of the Treasury Department.
Their visit to the coaidfield was described as "a visit to meet people and to see the lay of the land.” The party was shown over the ares of the Kopu open-cast mine, owned by Glen Afton Colleries. This mine is already producing 80 000 tons of coal a year. Ultimate requirements from it for the steam station may be five times as much as this. Substantial area? are readv f© r stripping of over-burden to increase output. The party also inspected Maramarua, where the. State owns a coalfield. Members will tour the Huntly mining area tomorrow morning, looking particularly at proposed new* open-cast areas and extensions. They will 'tart back to Wellington later in the day.
