D. J. INSOLE REACHES 1000 FOR SEASON

(New Zealand Press Association) LONDON, June 28. Two batsmen scored centuries in each innings of a match in the county championship which ended today. They were the Essex captain, D. J. Insole, and the Kent and England batsman, M. C. Cowdrey. Insole became the first batsman to reach 1000 runs this season, and Cowdrey has now made four centuries in four matches since his release from national service on medical grounds. The former Canterbury player, R. E. Hitchcock, who has been batting with success for Warwickshire, this time distinguished himself as a bowler, taking six wickets for 67 against Worcestershire. Results:— Lancashire 239 (Ikin 90) and 195 for nine wickets declared (Carr seven for 53) beat Derbyshire 130 (Hiltcn six for 59, Tattersail four for 36) and 175 (Collins five for 30) by 129 runs. Warwickshire 340 (Wolton 99) and 226 (Horner 90; Horton seven for 111) beat Worcestershire 228 (Hollies five for 65) and 187 (Hitchcock six for 67) by 151 runs. Nottinghamshire 384 (Hardstaff 75, Giles 142; Close five for 95) and 280 for five wickets (Hardstaff 134) drew with Yorkshire 389 for nine wickets declared (Hutton 194). Glamorgan 273 (Watkins 75; Cannings six for 67) and 150 (Gray seven for 52) lost to Hampshire 283 (Horton 89; MeConnon five for 59) and 141 for five wickets by five wickets. Somerset 262 and 272 for six wickets declared (Tremlett 92) drew with Leicestershire 216 (Palmer 74; Lomax four for 27) and 206 for three wickets (Tompkin 89 not out). Essex 286 (Insole 111) and 240 for six wickets declared (Insole 118) lost to Kent 321 for six wickets declared (Cowdrey 115 not out) and 209 for five wickets (Cowdrey 103 not out) by five wickets. Surrey 346 for seven wickets declared (Clark 87, Mclntyre 91) and 191 for four wickets declared (Fletcher 81) beat Northamptonshire 313 (Subba Row 112; Loader five for 89) and 155 (Laker four for 19) by 69 runs. Oxford 363 for five wickets declared (Williams 95) and 278 (Smith 100) drew with Sussex 378 for five wickets declared (Langridge 153) and 146 for four wickets. Cambridge 289 for nine wickets declared and 140 lost to Gloucestershire 259 (Smith seven for 55) and 172 for three wickets by seven wickets.
