BISHOP’S ROAD SCHOOL

12 CLASSROOMS TO BE BUILT PROGRESS ON OTHER PROJECTS The approval of sketch plans for a new school in Bishop’s road will enable the Canterbury Education Board to serve more directly an area where there has been considerable buildmg expansion between Phpanui and Harewood. The Education Department has approved a complete 12room school plus outbuildings. In this segment of the perimeter of Christchurch it will be comparable with the Wairakei Road School built some years ago to meet the sprawl of population further to the north-west. It will be one of the biggest schools planned by the board this year.. The biggest unit under construction has nine classrooms on back land on the city side of Burnside and Ham roads corner. The initial contract will be finished for occupation at the beginning of next year but extensions are proposed later on the 23-acre site. Also to be fully occupied next year is the new Linwood Intermed.ate School, which may take overflow pupils from North Linwood this year. Provided present progress is maintained two other new schools may be opened in the third term. Five classrooms and offices in Banks avenue, Shirley, are nearing completion. Eventually 12 classrooms are proposed. The nucleus of another 12-rodm school is going up at Sockburn between the Main South road and Springs road. Four rooms may be ready in the third term and the Education Board has just received approval of sketch plans for another six. Tenders have been accepted for twp classrooms at Kowhiterangi, for a teacher’s residence at Arahura pa and for a dental clinic at Ross, all on the West Coast.

A grant has been received for site development at the New Brighton District High School which is seriously cramped for playing areas but has neighbouring land awaiting preparation. The Ministry of Works 1 has been asked to negotiate for extensions ol the secondary department land at the Southbridge District High School.
