RESCUED FROM DROWNING
BOY OF THREE IN SEA FOR HALF-HOUR (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 20. Three-year-old Peter Stayte, who cannot swim, was rescued after being half an hour in the harbour off Devonport this afternoon. The boy had fallen unnoticed from the Devonport ferry wharf. He was seen floating on his back about 30 yards from the shore and 800 yards from the wharf by Mr H. D. Halford, of Takapuna. Mr Halford stripped to the waist, dived in, and brought the still-conscious boy ashore. He was given artificial respiration by a naval sick bay attendant, and then taken to a doctor. Tonight Peter was all right, but he was given a sleeping draught to ensure a restful night. On April 13, 1952, John Cassidy, who was then aged five, fell from his father’s launch in the Rangitoto Channel, and spent half an hour in the water before being found alive. John also could not swim, and was rescued when a woman, fishing from a dinghy, thought she heard a child calling “Daddy” from the sea.
