Protest At Moving Indian Citizens
(Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, June 17. Collective objections have been lodged by many white citizens of Rustenburg, a Transvaal municipality, against the town council’s proposal to move the entire Indian population from their homes and businesses to the town’s outskirts under the Group Areas Act. The Johannesburg correspondent of “The Times” reported this today. At hearings by the Government Land Tenure Advisory Board Committee, these Europeans condemned as unjust and extravagant the proposals which they said would destroy the livelihood of the Indians, whose families had lived in Rustenburg for 72 years. “The Times” said the council plan also involves the moving of several hundred Europeans and coloured peoples.
