Senate Bill Passed
CAPE TOWN, June 16. Parliamentary approval . for the South African Government’s Bill to “pack” the Senate was -completed today. Government Senators out-voted the Opposition by 24 to 15 in giving the Bill its third and final reading in the Upper House. ‘ Only a handful of spectators were present in the small red-upholstered Senate chamber when the bill, which has provoked a nation-wide opposition protest campaign, reached the end of its three-weeks journey through Parliament.
Cheers from the Government supporters, and cries of “shame” from Opposition members, greeted the announcement of the voting result which had been a foregone conclusion.
