Canasta Drops Out Of Sprint At Oamaru
RACING
Canasta was scratched yesterday for the Grange Handicap, the second leg of the double at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s winter meeting today. Grange Handicap honours appear to be safely within reach of the Southlander, Suphero, which made a brilliant open-class winning debut in the Waltham Handicap at Riccarton in April. He had to be eased in his work when he ran a nail into a foot not long before the Dimedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting, and did not race there, but if F. W. Ellis has him in good racing trim for today’s test he should shade the others for ability. Ngapunawai, one of only two Ric-carton-trained horses in the field, will probably be one of Suphero’s strongest opponents if he races with the dash that characterised his trial at Riccarton on Thursday. With Canasta out of the field. Sure Swift may now be Wingatui’s best. Diablo is a doubtful runner in the Oamaru Winter Cup. the first leg of the double. He is expected to fulfil an alternative engagement in the hurdles, in which he will be ridden by the Riccarton horseman, J. W. McDonald.
Golden Morn and Abbot’s Choice, two other double acceptors, will probably run in the Cup, but Dahlia’s mission is likely to be the Grange Handicap. Dahlia was left at Wingatui under the care of R. Heasley after the Dunedin meeting, but will rejoin G. S. Barr’s Riccarton team after racing today. Dahlia is a stablemate of Relinquish, one of the early favourites for the cup. Relinquish showed his fitness for this test in an attractive mile trial at Riccarton on Thursday. He is a powerful finisher, and had to be good to come from a long way back for a win over a mile and 35 yards at Washdyke last month. Good Record at Oamaru Fulgent will round off a good record for the season at Oamaru if he wins today. He has already recorded two successes over a mile and a quarter on the course this year, the President’s Handicap in January, and the Oamaru Cup in March falling easily to his challenges. Fulgent may be feeling his weight at the end of a hard-run race, but on looks he has never been better, and his nippiness and his ability to muster a sharp sprint will make him hard to beat. Royal Voyage and Lord Rowallan may be the best of the others. Royal Voyage’s chance will brighten if D. J. Thistoll is able to give himplenty of racing room all the way. The Oraritrained Royal Chief gelding has been placed in stronger fields than this, and over more ground. Conrad, whose debut over country produced a second to Fort Marshall at Ashburton, may be the most improved horse in the Burnside Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase. He stayed well in his races over hurdles, and if his jumping is reasonably good several of the others, some of which had hard races at Wingatui, may find the Royal Arch gelding their superior for stamina. Alb re-entered the field for the Hack Hurdles when Snuffbox was scratched earlier in the week, but his mission will probably be the Waikaura Champion Hack Handicap later in the day. Spike Jones is almost certain of a run 1 in the hurdles. in which Vocalize, ' Poilu, and Shirley’s Pride should play 1 big roles. Search Party and Senna have been scratched for the Trial Handicap, al- • lowing Snaresbrook and Rani to reenter the field. The only other on the reserve list is Miss Commission, a stablemate of Spike Jones. Orari Stable Well Represented
Perfect Peach and Inlay may drop out of the field for the Awamoa Hack Handicap, in which Bright Wave and Odile are on the reserve list. Odile races in the same colours as Perfect Peach. Betting will be well spread on this six-furlong dash for the hack sprinters. The Orari trainer. L. H. Pratt has a likely pair in Big Ben and Whipsnade, which, with reasonably good runs, may both pay dividends. Big Ben won at Waimate two starts back, then failed id bad ground at Wingatui. Whipsnade shaped like an early winner when he beat all but Lady Lothian and Airscol over this distance at Washdyke on May 21. The three-year-old Count Rendered gelding just went under in a hard finish. Sway along failed on a heavy track in his one test for stamina at Wingatui, but under better conditions today he should take beating in the Waikaura Champion Hack Handicap. Hickory Stick, Macduff, and Passchenedaele are Canterbury hacks likely to fare better than most of their southern rivals in the Farewell Hack Handicap. Hickory Stick and Macduff are both last-start winners, and Passchenedaele. a winner at Riccarton at Easter, was well on the way towards his entry into open company when soreness interrupted his programme.
The form of Aphelion and Admiral’s Keep at Wingatui gives them chances. The Riccarton-trained Decipher win probably be the best of those on the minimum. Oamaru had some rain on Thursday evening, but the weather was fine yesterday. The track will probably be easy.
