ROOKS
Sir, —It is disappointing to find farmers appealing to the Government to give a subsidy to shooters of rooks. Surely the Government has troubles enough without being called upon in this manner. It is a job for farmers, but as they seem to lack the desired energy, the least they can do is to find the ammunition to enable the Associated Gun Clubs to do the work. To the farmer whose oat crop seed was devoured by rooks I would say, get a few pounds of red lead and coat the seed with it before sowing, and the birds will leave it alone. I always do this before planting seeds; and it is effective. To diminish the increase of rooks give a decent incentive to schoolboys for every dozen eggs they collect during the laying season. The rooks have been caw-cawing too long; it is time their song was ended.— Yours, etc., HIRAM HUNTER. June 17, 1955.
