Call For Greater Production
(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, June IL
Senator Henry Jackson (Democrat, Washington) said yesterday: “It i| now apparent that there will have to be an increase of the United Statci atomic weapons production schedule.’
Senator Jackson, chairman of a Joint Congressional Atomic Energy Sub-committee, emphasised that ha was talking about the whole family of atomic weapons and said it might be necessary to provide for additional new production facilities.
He said the acceleration of atomia weapons production must be in addition to the increased production oj jet military aircraft just announced. Senator Jackson spoke to rcporteri after a secret meeting of the subcommittee, which deals with military application of atomic energy.
He said the United States could not hope to match the Soviet Union in manpower and that it must concentrate on maintaining a heavy edge in fire-power. “The only way to maintain ouf military posture is through air-atomiq superiority.” he said. “Now we face the threat of losing that,” Senator Jackson said atomic weapons and the means of delivering them were equally important. It was in the field of delivery that th a Soviet Union had made the most menacing advances recently.
