PACIFIC NAVAL EXERCISES

The- New Zealand frigate Kaniere and three ships of the British Far East Fleet have joined the Australian-New Zealand naval task force, which has been carrying out exercises in waters north of Australia. Tlie force, which left Darwin bn May 27, consisted of the New Zealand ships Black Prince and Pukaki, and four Australian destroyers. A dispatch from an Australian naval correspondent in one of the destroyers, H.M.A.S. Tobruk, says that, escorting an imaginary convoy, the ships passed through the Arafura Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Java Sea. In the Indian Ocean on May 31 they were joined by H.M.S. Newcastle, Cossack, ahd Concord, of the British Far East Fleet, and H.M.N.Z.S. Kaniere.
The submarines Thorough and Tactician and aircraft based on Darwin and Singapore also took part in the exercises. The exercises, conducted under war-time, conditions, included day and night attacks on the convoy by raiders, submarines, arid aircraft.
