TRACK FOR MOTOR RACING
PRIVATE VENTURE AT LEVIN
“The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, June 7.
A firm of road-building contractors will begin work next week on New Zealand’s first private motor-racing track on a site at Levin. The circuit has been surveyed and it is expected that the track will be finished well before Christmas. The tentative date for the first meeting is in November. Behind the project a racing driver, R. Frost, whose 500 c.c. Coopers have gained top places in carracing events throughout the Dominion for the last two seasons. Finance has been supplied by many motor enthusiasts throughout the district. The fact that the track will be privately owned will make it a valuable amenity for racing drivers. Of the five existing major New Zealand tracks, three—at Wigram, Ohakea, ahd Ardmore—are aerodromes under Royal New Zealand Air Force control, arid the others, in Christchurch and Dunedin, are ordinary road circuits. The new track, which will be a mile long, is part of Levin’s racecourse, and will be the same width as normal grand prix circuits in Europe. Ariother half-mile could be added later. It is intended to seal it with asphalt and cover with chips, making a non-skid surface. ■
