JOCKEY DIES OF INJURIES
J. S. CAMPBELL, OF HASTINGS "The Press” Special Service
napier, June 7 One of New Zealand’s leading jockevs 38-year-old J. S. (Jock) Campbell, was fatally injured m the sixth race at the Napier- Park Club’s meeting on Monday when he fell from his mount. Producer He died in the Napier Public Hospital this evening. Campbell sustained severe head and other injuries, which required an immediate operation. After this operation he showed signs of rallying, but then his condition worsened, and another emergency operation was performed. Since Campbell’s admission the hospital’s switchboard has been swamped with calls from many parts of the North Island from persons inquiring about his condition. Campbell was extremely popular, not only among his fellow jockeys, but also among those who have anything to do with racing in the Wellington district. He was first indentured to the late S. J. Reid, later being transferred to B. H. Morris. During the present season he was the only jockey to hold a retainer. This was in favour of Mr and Mrs C. G. Nes-tor-Bayliss. _
