STEEPLES WINNER BREAKS DOWN
BAD LUCK FOR MR A. T. CARTWRIGHT ‘The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN, June 7. It is unfortunate for his Christchurch owner, Mr A. T. Cartwright, and the Riccarton trainer, M. J. Wadley, that the promising jumper, Chivalrous, broke down after his success in the Tahuna Steeplechase on Saturday. The Robin Goodfellow gelding was making his third attempt over country, and his performance on Saturday stamped him as a jumper with more than average ability. His injury appears to be serious, and he win remain at Wingatui until he is fit to return home. Ironside, winner of the Otago Steeplechase, returned to Washdyke yesterday morning, and will not be on hand for the last day of the meeting on Saturday. F. TriHord’s stable will be represented by WI ? Baron (Otago Hurdles), Ptarmigan (Provincial Handicap), and the maiden, Column.
Cheerio, the 2/1 favourite in the Birthday Handicap on Saturday, fell on the road before the race and received minor injuries. His Invercargill trainer, D. V. Pamchurst would have withdrawn the Baffles gelding from his engagement, but as this was the first leg of the double, he was prevented by the early scratching time. Cheerio raced disappointingly, and was a costly investment for his supporters on the double machine. He was a firm S. v< ? ur J « ith 10s tickets in a total pool of £26,223.
