SALARIES FOR NURSES
AUCKLAND BOARD URGES RISES
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 7. Increased salaries for nurses “in line with their value to the community’’ will be sought by the Auckland Hospital Board. The board decided this tonight on the recommendation of its personnel and nursing committee, which considers the present salaries for trained nurses, grossly inadequate. The Health Department will be asked to take the following factors into account:—
(1) The inconvenience nurses suffer through working irregular hours. (2) The frequently unpleasant nature of their duties. (3) The disparity between nurses’ salaries and those paid to others with lesser qualifications and doing less arduous work.
The board’s action was the sequel to surveys made in February on the shortage of nursing staff. It was then reported that the shortage of pupil nurses was so acute that hospital wards were being kept open only by making constant staff changes and “patching up’* one ward at the expense of another.
