THE QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY

Sir, —A very fine ceremony this morning in honour of Her Majesty the Queen. The band played the National Anthem with dignity and beauty. I would ask however, why do we keep the Queen’s Birthday in mid-winter? It would certainly be better for us New Zealanders to keep it on the real day, April 21. It was terribly cold to stand so long. The National Anthem should be sung by everyone. The tune is fine and dignified, but it is the words that matter. Without the words, sung by everyone, it means nothing.—Yours etc., t e HONOR BRIGHT. June 6, 1955.
