Miss Jan Ballantyne will arrive in Christchurch by air today to spend three weeks’ holiday with her parents, Mr and Mrs Kenneth Ballantyne, Bristol street.

The death has occurred in Wellington of Sister Mary Augustine, of the Convent of Mercy, and the last of the seven members of the highly talented McDonald family, formerly well known in Wellington. As a young woman, Sister Mary Augustine won an Australian gold medal for singing, and after she entered the convent she taught singing and music in different parts of the Dominion, including Blenheim and Picton. She was a particularly successful teacher, and many of her old pupils kept in touch with her. The annual meeting of the Stratford Garden Club was held at the home of Mrs G. Louisson, Knowles street. The election of officers resulted as follows: president. Miss Betty Webb; vice-presi-dents. Mrs J. R. Voice and Mrs H. M. Watson; honorary secretary, Mrs R. Simmers; honorary treasurer, Mrs E. Summers 2. and Mrs Weir 3: spray of berries: Mrs Feast 1, Mrs Louisson 2, Mrs Simmers 3. Mrs- M. E. Orchard presided at the monthly meeting of the Canterbury Provincial Executive of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers. Representatives of 30 branches attended. Members were congratulated on the excellent display of handcrafts and preserved fruits, vegetables and jams at the Industries Fair. It was agreed to provide helpers for the Red Cross Shop Day. and to assist the Now South Wales flood victims. Remits for the coming conference in Wellington were discussed. Mrs R. A. Ambridge reported a satisfactory month in the housekeeping work.

Mr E. R. Field-Dodgson was the guest of the Christchurch Recorded Music Society ,at a recent recital. He gave a talk on the mam work on the programme. “A Sea Symphony.’’ by Vaughan Williams.

ILAM GARDEN CLUB The annual meeting of the Ham Garden Club was held at the home of Mrs J. Martin. ,260 Yaldhurst road. Mrs E. Hine presided. Reference was made to the death of Mrs David Crozier, and members stood in silence as a mark of respect. The good wishes of the club were expressed to Mrs Maddren, who is leaving soon for Auckland. Songs were sung by W. A. Grieve, accompanied by Mrs.H. Govan. Mrs Hume presented a gift to Mrs M. Wylde, the retiring secretary, and thanked hqr for her service to the club for four years. The following officers were elected: president, Mrs E. Hume; vice-presi-dents. Mesdames M. Sweney and A. J. Gainsford; treasurer, Miss G. Hegarty: secretary, Mrs J. Dawson; committee, Mesdames N. Wylde, A. Johnston, M. Kemp and R. B. LovellSmith and Miss G. Hegarty. The results of the year’s competitions were: Hume Cup (for member with the highest points in all sections), Miss G. Hegarty; Miss Hegarty’s prize for runner-up, Mrs A. J. Gainsford: decorative, section A, Mrs A. J. Gainsford 1, Mrs D. BoydWilson 2. Mrs D. Guild 3; section B, Mrs R. Vincent 1, Mrs G. C. Baudinet, Mrs M: Kemp and Mrs A. Johnston (equal) 2; best bloom, Miss Hegarty 1, Mrs E. Hume 2, Mrs V. Hean and Mrs J. Mcßryde (equal) 3; cut flower, Miss Hegarty 1, Mrs Hume 2, Mrs J. H. Hinchey and Mrs H. Govan (equal) 3. Rose bushes were presented to Mesdames Guild, R. Hogg, Vincent, Hean and Boyd-Wilson as a token of appreciation of the work they did for the Woodland Flower Show. Monthly competitions resulted:—A section, Mrs Boyd-Wilson 1, Mrs Guild 2, Mrs F. Irvine 3; B section, Mrs I. Skip worth 1, Mrs A. Johnston 2, Mrs M. Glasgow 3. Assistant hostesses were Mesdames R. Gilmour, Hinchey and Hean.
