GOOD ABBOT IN FORM
PLEASING TRIAL AT INVERCARGILL "The Press’* Special Service INVERCARGILL, June 2. Good Abbot, which is likely to be a favourite for the Dunedin Birthday Handicap, rounded off his preparation with a first-class sprint effort at Invercargill this morning. Good Abbot looks an improved horse since he won a double at Invercargill last month. There was not a great amount of fast work. The course proper, with the poles 18 feet out, was heavy. Good Abbot, accompanied by Coinalot, moved up smartly from the five-furlong post, and after running the first furlong in 12sec, they completed the journey in Imin 6 4-ssec, the last half-mile in 54 4-ssec. This was a particularly good effort under the conditions, as both had plenty in reserve. Coinalot, a novice winner at his last start, is a hack sprint candidate at Wingatui. Chandelle and Defallock began from the mile, but there was little speed on until they reached the half. They covered the last six furlongs in Imin 24 3-ssec, and the final half-mile in 54 2- Chandelle was galloping much the better. With Suphero out of the Birthday Handicap, Chandelle will be ridden by W. F. Ellis. J M. Cappie, who had been engaged earlier for Chandelle, will ride Baffling Eyes. Light-weight Prospect Kasr-el-Nil, a candidate for the Winter Handicap, impressed by the manner in which he covered five furlongs alone in Imin 6 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 52 3- Kasr-el-Nil always races well fresh, and he will be a strong lightweight prospect. He will be ridden by W. D. Skelton.
Three jumpers, Free Gift, Contented, and Chief Light, worked over a round, covering the last mile in Imin 56 4-ssec, and the final half in 56 2-ssec. There is nothing wrong with Free Gift’s condition. Brooke was restricted to an easy six furlongs, the last half-mile in 56 2-ssec. He is in great order. A candidate for the Birthday Handicap, Baffling Eyes, showed something of his best when he dashed over half a mile with Friendly Lad in 52 2-ssec, the best of the morning. He revelled in the heavy going. Travee sprinted half a mile in 54 4-5 sec, and did it well. It was a useful solo effort for a novice. Dawn Light and Spring Night were not hurried to run five furlongs in Imin 11 3-ssec, the last four in 57 2-ssec.
