SCHOOLING AT WINGATUI

RYELAND PLEASES. BUT PULLS UP LAME "The Press’* Special Service DUNEDIN. June 2. Ryeland pleased in his final preparation for the Otago Steeplechase, the feature jumping event at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday, by finishing well clear of Colonel Argosy after a round of the steeplechase fences on the course proper at Wingatui today. However, the Nightly gelding was favouring his near front leg when he pulled up. A cracked hoof has been giving Rveland’s’ trainer, E. J. Jennings, some concern, but it is hoped that it will respond to treatment and that he will be able to fulfil his engagement. It was Rveland s off tendon which caused a long spell, but this leg now appears to be quite sound. Colonel Argosy (G. Branks) was the “J 5 * to show out, but Ryeland (J. W. McDonald) soon drew clear and had a J^ ad as they went to the last fence, the hedge at the straight entrance. Though Colonel Argosy screwed at the last fence tfie Jumping was of a high standard. Full Tilt (G. Hampton), Wealthy (L> Dawson), and Chivalrous (J. \V. McDoni d Lu took . the last jump together, six lengths ahead of Kind Wish (S. J HarfencS n) after a round of the same Kind Wish was the first to take the sod wall, but Full Tilt soon worked to tne front, and running to the board fence at the half-mile was shading Chival'vhich was clea r of Kind Wish and SKS’V' - S ealthy dr®"' up to the leaders going to the water jump, and the three leaders cleared this jump and the last fence on terms. Good Jumping Tne jumping was exceptionally good, «h Jhe. honours, perhaps, going to We3lthy, which finished particularly well after being given time to settle down The horses were eased up after the last fence to save the track. Chivalrous, a big Hobin Goodfellow gelding, jumped with confidence for his limited experience. Kind Wish had not a Sailop, and this no effort had left her Wlthout a finishing Igiri (C. G. Low) and Ironside (R. o. Cairns) were well matched over the same fences, and both horses gave a pleasing display. Ironside was just clear as they took the last fence, but Igiri slightly outjumped him at most of the other fences. Algiers (L. A. Coutts) and Lacus (B. E Kennedy) led Fair Night (G. W. Julius) over four flights of hurdles at a good pace. Alfiers and Lacas cumpleted their task well, but Fair Night almost fell at the second to last fence. Redlo (C. G. Low) completed his preparation for the Otago on the second day of the meeting with a good school over the two hurdles down the back twice. He was accompanied by his stablemate. Infidel (W. J. Klemick), which also put in a good round. Manos (G. Hampton) gave a good display over a round of four hurdles. He was accompanied over the last two fences by Reformed (B. E. Kennedy), which hooked the second fence when he took off a length behind his companion. The course proper was closed, but was opened late in the morning, after a deputation had approached club officials, to allovz visiting jumpers to school over the steeplechase country. Fog Prevents Timing The tracks were heavy in the morning, and any chance of their drying was dispelled when rain set in after midday. The going on Saturday should be ideal for “mudlarks.” Thick fog enveloped the course until a late hour, and it. was impossible to time gallops. Of the few late workers. Gallant Peter and Admiral’s Keep were the most impressive.

Gallant Peter (B. E. Kennedy) was at a disadvantage in the weights, but was finishing on in his trial over six furlongs on the plough to be half a length clear of Formal (G. At Campbell), wth a similar margin to Balveine (H. N. Lovett). The opening two furlongs took 28 2-ssec, and the distance was completed in Imin 23 3-ssec.

Gallant Peter has been a disappointment in his racing, and will -be tried, over more ground in the St. Clair Handicap. Admiral’s Keep (B. J. Anderton), a lazy galloper, was kept up to his work to end six furlongs on the grass well clear of Kind Wish (N. Wadsworth). The last half-mile was run in 54 2-ssec, and the concluding three furlongs in 42sec. Hashish (C. T. Wilson) and Captain Flint (B. D. Cunningham) were together over half a mile on the same track in 56sec, the last three furlongs in 43sec.

Fort Marshall has been scratched from the Tahuna and Otago Steeplechases, and Irish Glance has been withdrawn from the Greenfield Hurdles. Rondel has been scratched from the Brighton Handicap, and one further scratching is required to avoid divisions in this race.

Doubtful starters include Free Trade (Trial Stakes), Brace (Tahuna Steeples), and Export (Greenneld Hurdles). Desperado was not brought south for his engagement in the Greenfield Hurdles, and J. W. McDonald, of Riccarton, will now ride Johnny Peep in this event.
