POULTRY SHOW OPENS

LARGE ENTRIES IN MOST CLASSES GOOD STANDARD OF CAGE BIRDS A poultry section with 480 entries is the main feature of the Christchurch Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Club’s annual show, which opened yesterday. The total number of entries in the show is about 1400. In most breeds, the characteristics of good laying strains were looked for first, said Mr S. E. Frost, a poultry judge. Points were also allotted for shape, plumage, and the bird’s condition at the time of the show. Some birds tended to lay so much that their condition was detrimentally affected, he added. The judge of the champion classes of cage birds (Mr C. A. Breech) said the standard in most classes was good, and in a few cases, exceptional. The South Island championship budgerigar was exhibited by H. J. Edmond. Large entries were received in the jacobin, tumbler, and fantail classes of pigeons. Most of the prizes were won by W. S. Whiteside, with birds imported before the Government embargoed, imports. Until this ban is lifted, there is no way of improving the present New Zealand stock. A large number of birds were exhibited in the fantail pigeon classes. These birds are common to old mansions and castle ruins in England. Their tails should present a circle of 320 degrees, and be slightly concave, and they look like a white, feathery ball. Results were:— STANDARD HEAVY BREEDS (Judge: Mr C. R. Burt.) Mrs A. P.
