MORE ITEMS FREED INCREASED DUTY TO BE PAID ON SOME (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 2. A further series of articles released from import control is set out in the Gazette tonight. The Minister of Customs (Mr D. J. Eyre) said that increases had been made in most cases in the duty payable on items released. Items now released from control are imitation jewellery, carbon paper, typewriter ribbons, handbag frames, clothing patterns, and plastic adhesive tape. Duty has been increased on upholsterers’ spiral springs, which were released from import licensing control m 1951. The Minister said that decisions would be reached i on other imports. Inci eases in tariff had in most cases been made with a view to protecting New Zealand industries, said the Minister. “Throughout the application of this policy we have desired that the Board of Trade has regard not only to the interests of the manufacturing industries, but also to the interests of the consumers and of the primary industries, and to the effects generally economy, especially in costs,” said Mr Eyre.
