RAIL-CARS FOR MAIN TRUNK
DAYLIGHT SERVICE TO BEGIN SOON
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 27. Six of the 35 articulated 88-seater rail-cars being imported by the Railways Department are in New Zealand being prepared for service, and the Railways Commission proposes to inaugurate the daily daylight services between Wellington and Auckland as soon as possible.
The General Manager of Railways (Mr A. T. Gandell) said today that a firm date for the inauguration of these services could not be fixed until certain “running in” and trial runs had been completed.
A trial return run between Wellington and Auckland would probably be made within the next few weeks at the speeds necessary to maintain proposed timetable of 11 hours 20 minutes between the two cities, said Mr Gandell.
