STATE FLATS IN RICCARTON

CONTRACT LET FOR THREE BLOCKS KILMOR’S STREET SCHEME STILL BEING PLANNED (Fron Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, May 26. A contract has been let for the construction of three blocks of State rental flats in Riccarton road. It is expected that the flats will take about 18 months to build. There will be 18 flats in each of three blocks, making 54 units in the scheme, and each block will be three storeys high. The flats ! will be similar to those already being built in Auckland, Wellington, and Petone. Rents have not yet been fixed for the flats, but it is expected that they will be in line with present State house rentals.

Plans for the proposed six-storeyed block of flats in Kilmore street are still on the drawing board. At the moment preliminary drawings are being made. It is expected that the final design will not be decided until work is- well under way on a big block planned for Wellington. The Government is using the Wellington block as an experiment before committing itself too far on other schemes in Auckland. Christchurch, and Duned’ -.
