NAVY LEAGUE BALL

VISITING OFFICERS ENTERTAINED Resplendent in their dress uniforms, 24 Marine bandsmen from H.M.A.S. Sydney gave a display of marching and a harmonised version of the sunset ceremony to entertain more than 400 guests at the Navy League’s ball last evening. The ball was held in H. Pegasus. The guests were received by Captain G. H. Dennistoun, president of the Navy League, and Mrs Dennistoun. Mrs Dennistoun wore an elegant frock of black arid silver lace finished with a stole of white lace. The specially invited guests included the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) and Mrs Macfarlane, the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren) and Mrs Warren), the Flag Officer Commanding the Australian Fleet (Rear-Admiral H. M. Burrell), the Commanding Officer of H.M.A.S. Sydney (Captain G. C. Oldharh) and Mrs Oldham, the commanding officer of the Canterbury division of the R.N.Z.N.V.R. (Commander J. N. Allan) and Mrs Allan, the Commander of the Southern Military District (Brigadier J. T. Burrows) and Mrs Burrows, the Commanding Officer of the Royal New Zealand Air Force station, Wigram (Group Captain F. R.. Dix) and Mrs Dix, the chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board (Mr F. E. Sutton) and Mrs Sutton, the Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast) and Mrs Feast, the chairman of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Empire Society (Mr Wilfred Peers) and Mrs Peers, the president of the Victoria League (Mrs J. Mowbray Tripp), the president of the Christchurch branch of the Overseas League (Mr A. I. Cottrell) and Mrs Cottrell, Mr R. L Livingstone (English Speaking Union) and Mrs Livingstone, and 50 officers of the Sydney. Mr W. G. P. Cuningham, chairman of the ball committee, was assisted by representatives of the various groups within the Navy League. Before the ball a dinner party for about 60 persons was held at Elizabeth House.

Sefton-Kowal.—Mrs Mitchell presided at the monthly meeting of the SeftonKowai Country Women’s Institute. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of Mrs Boyce and Mrs F.. McGowan. who died recently. Mrs Mitchell paid a tribute to Mrs McGowan, who was a foundation member of the institute and an excellent member for more than 21 years. Mrs S. M. Wilson was elected a vice-president. Birthday sprays were presented to two members. An interesting demonstration on making seagrass baskets was given by Mrs and Miss Lander, of Rangiora. Competitions resulted:—best bloom: Mrs McCartney 1, Mrs Fletcher 2, Mrs C. D. Petrie 3. Small bloom: Mrs Arps 1, Mrs Lane 2, Mrs I. Peters 3. Rangiora, Pines Beach, and Ashley institues to attend their annual birthday parties. Mrs R. Meyers gave an interesting report on the annual meeting held at Sefton. Mrs Campbell gave an interesting report on the annual meeting of the federation at Sefton. A dress parade by those who took dressmaking classes proved most enjoyable.
