GERALDINE DISTRICT CENTENNIAL
PUBLIC MEETING PLANS CELEBRATIONS
Arrangements to celebrate the centennial of the old district'of Geraldine were made at a public meeting held in the Geraldine Town Hall. The Mayor of Geraldine (Mr C. S. Davies) opened the meeting and associated with him was the chairman of the Geraldine County Council (Mr A. J. Davey), who presided, and the Mayor of Temuka (Mr G. Harris).
Mr Davey outlined the steps taken by the three local bodies who had discussed the preliminary arrangements for the centennial and placed these before the meeting for their consideration.
It was agreed to hold the celebrations early in April and to adopt the suggestion of a traffic island at the junction of the main State highway and deviation to Geraldine, at Winchester as the praject to commemorate the occasion. It was also agreed that the celebrations be commenced on a Saturday with sports, parades, pageant, and a procession in the Winchester Domain, and continued on Sunday with special church services in the districts. Monday is to be set aside for the dedication of historic spots in the district and a dinner at Geraldine in the evening. The celebrations would close with a centennial ball at Temuka on the Tuesday. A function for the youth movements of the district would also be considered for the Saturday evening. The holding of a centennial race meeting was not. favoured by the meeting. The chairman of the Geraldine County (Mr A. J. Davey) was elected chairman of the combined centennial committee, and the Mayor of Geraldine (Mr C. S. Davies) and the Mayor of Temuka (Mr G. Harris) were elected deputy-chairmen. The county clerk (Mr E. P. Bennett) was*elected secretary, with the town clerks of Geraldine and Temuka (Messrs A. Hill and W. I* Burt> as assistant secretaries.
